A dois passos do Mercado Municipal de Faro, acaba de ser inaugurado um novo espaço cultural. Surge pela mão de Liliana André Teles Palhinha e José António Barreiros - advogado e escritor que nos últimos anos se tem dedicado a estudar as redes estrangeiras de espionagem activas em Portugal durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial. É simultaneamente uma livraria (baptizada de «Pátio das Letras»), um espaço de exposições («Espaço Memória»), uma editora («O Mundo em Gavetas») e um arquivo público para a documentação recolhida por Barreiros nas pesquisas históricas que inspiraram os seus livros. Para já, o espaço tem patentes duas exposições. A primeira é sobre Ian Fleming – escritor cuja obra literária ultrapassa em muito aquilo que o cinema popularizou em torno da personagem «James Bond, o agente 007». A segunda é uma exposição de pintura (óleo sobre tela segundo várias técnicas), de Sonia Cabañas, artista mexicana cuja obra ainda é pouco conhecida dos algarvios.

Histórias fora da gaveta

Depois de uma inauguração bem participada, no passado Sábado, dia 12, o mais recente espaço cultural de Faro já mexe. Para além das histórias de espiões e agentes secretos, aqui, os frequentadores têm um segredo para descobrir. Atrás dos livros há um agradável terraço onde é possível ler ou descansar. Em breve, irá acolher eventos diversos como tertúlias, concertos, e outras missões pouco secretas mas sempre culturais. Quem o diz é Liliana Palhinha, que sonhou reabilitar duas antigas casas de família para as abrir à cidade e à região.

vivalgarve: Como é que surge este espaço?

Liliana Palhinha: A ideia principal surge com a sensação que em Faro não há um local onde se encontrem livros para além daqueles que são as novidades mais populares do momento - isto é aqueles livros que se esgotam em dois três meses e que não fazem história. Surge da sensação que não há uma livraria com um acervo de autores de referência. Não é porque não haja público leitor, mas simplesmente porque alguém ainda não se tinha lembrado que havia aqui essa possibilidade. Achamos que o mercado também é circular e portanto, também se criam clientes. A nossa política é fazer uma selecção de qualidade daquilo que apresentamos ao público.

Quais os critérios?

Bem, essa selecção assumo-a essencialmente eu. Quando falo em obras seleccionadas, não falo apenas em obras escolhidas para um público altamente intelectualizado. Falo em boas obras, mas dirigidas ao grande público. Vamos procurar ter variedade, desde o romance ao conto. Nos dias que correm, as pessoas têm pouco tempo para ler, e gostam cada vez mais dos livros de contos. Temos muitos autores portugueses e futuramente teremos ainda mais. E queremos apostar muito nos autores algarvios.

Além disso há a estampa da casa «O mundo em gavetas»…

Sim, é verdade. Já temos quatro edições. Nós começamos como editora, mas já na altura tínhamos o projecto de criar um espaço cultural. Estas duas casas estavam em ruínas, metemos os papéis na Câmara em 2006 e ao fim de dois anos e meio conseguimos finalmente abrir, porque são processos muito burocráticos. Portanto, a ideia já existia. Criamos aqui algo ao que chamámos «Espaço Memória» - porque dentro da livraria damos uma importância especial à História. Futuramente, pretendemos fazer exposições como a que está agora patente – que é simultaneamente literária e histórica. A propósito de um autor de novelas, aborda-se todo um período importantíssimo do século XX. Em breve, queremos ter aqui exposições de pintura, música e tertúlias sobre temas da actualidade.

Sei que há uma predilecção sobre temas relacionados com a espionagem e a Segunda Guerra Mundial. Porquê?

Exactamente. Porque são temas aos quais o José António Barreiros está muito ligado. A editora que criámos só publicou até agora quatro livros, todos sobre esses assuntos.

Os segredos são muito fascinantes, e ninguém é apenas aquilo que aparenta. Talvez por isso, nós estamos tão interessados neste mundo de duas caras.

Alguma razão especial para a escolha da pintora Sónia Cabañas para a inauguração?

Sim. Eu já conhecia a pintura dela e admirava-a imenso. Temos aqui uma retrospectiva de quadros todos a óleo. São técnicas muito diferenciadas. Apresenta quadros inspirados em temas mexicanos, outros em temas mais portugueses e outros mais fantasiosos. Eu sabia que esta pintora só tinha feito três ou quatro exposições, e concretamente no Algarve, apenas duas – uma em Albufeira, outra em Portimão – porque não se lhe têm aberto as portas. Talvez por não se considerar uma artista naquele sentido lato. Por isso, atendendo à qualidade que a pintura dela tem, achei por bem convidá-la.

E a curto prazo?

Em relação aos nossos eventos, vamos tentar diversificar

o mais possível. Isto é apenas o princípio.

A new cultural space has just opened up a couple of steps from Faro’s Municipal Market. It’s the project of two, Liliana André Teles Palinha and José António Barreiros – a lawyer and writer who has dedicated himselve in recent years to the study of foreign spy networks active in Portugal during World War II. The place works as a bookshop (called «Pátio das Letras»), an exhibition space («Espaço Memória»), a publishing house («O Mundo em Gavetas») and a public archive for all the documentation unearthed by Barreiros in the historical research which has been the inspiration for his books. For the moment, the space is showing two exhibitions. The first centres on Ian Fleming – the writer whose literary achievements far surpass those for which his reputation has been immortalized by the cinema: the adventures of «James Bond, secret agent 007» - and the second is an exhibition of paintings (oil on canvas, using various techniques) by Sónia Cabañas, a Mexican artist whose work is still largely unknown in the Algarve.

The World in a Drawer

After the well-attended opening party last Saturday 12th July, Faro’s latest cultural venue is well on its way. People using this place have a secret to unearth. Behind the books there’s a lovely open-air terrace where you can read, or simply relax. Soon, there’ll be various events: literary meetings, concerts and other activities. They may not be top-secret, but they will be cultural. This information comes from Liliana Palhinha, whose dream it was to restore two old houses belonging to relatives and open them up for use by the city.

vivalgarve: So, how did this space come about?

Liliana Palhinha: The main impetus came from the feeling that there is nowhere in Faro where you can find ‘real’ books – other than best-sellers which run out after two or three months, and are then forgotten. It came from the feeling that there is no bookshop with a good stock of reputable authors – and it’s not because there isn’t the reading public waiting out there, but more because no-one’s managed to come up with the idea. We also believe that the market is self-perpetuating, and that will create clients. Our ethos is to bring together a selection of quality authors which we present to the public.

What are the criteria?

Well, I’m the one who makes the choices. When I say ‘selection of quality authors’, I don’t just mean a highly intellectual selection. I mean good books that appeal to the public as a whole. We’ll be looking at everything from novels to short stories. These days, people have so little time to read, they enjoy short stories more and more. We have a lot of works by Portuguese authors, and in the future we’ll have even more. We also want to showcase Algarvean writers.

And then there’s your publishing business «O Mundo em Gavetas»…

Yes, you’re right. We’ve already produced four books. We started here as a publishing house – but we already had the idea for a cultural venue as well. These two buildings were in ruins. We submitted the restoration project to the Câmara in 2006 and, after two and a half years, we were finally able to open. There’s so much bureaucracy here! But, the idea was there. We opened what we call «Espaço Memória» because within the bookstore we want to dedicate a space to history. In the future, we hope to stage exhibitions on this theme – literature and history together. When it comes to writing stories, the 20th century was exceptionally important for authors. Also we hope to put on exhibitions of paintings, concerts, and have literary discussions on themes that are current.

I know one of the favourite current themes is espionage and World War II. Why?

Yes, it is – and that’s because they’re both subjects that fascinate José António Barreiros. Our publishing business has so far published four books – all on these subjects. The secrets of the past are fascinating – nobody being what they appeared to be. Perhaps, for this reason, we’ve been so interested in this subject of the ‘two-sided’ world.

Was there are particular reason for choosing the painter Sónia Cabañas for the inauguration?

Yes. I already knew her work and really liked it. What we have here is really a retrospective in oils. They’re all showing very different techniques. Some are inspired by Mexico, others are more Portuguese – while some are simply fantasies. I knew that this artist had only had three or four exhibitions – in the Algarve, only two: one in Albufeira, another in Portimão. It’s been difficult for her to find a welcoming venue – possibly because she’s not that diverse. But I can see the quality in her work, and for this reason I invited her to exhibit here.

Immediate plans?

With regard to our events, we want to diversify as much as possible. This is just the beginning…

Der Anwalt und Buchautor widmete sich in den letzten Jahren dem Studium der ausländischen Spionagenetze in Portugal während des Zweiten Weltkrieges. Es ist gleichzeitig eine Bilibliothek namens «Pátio das Letras» (Hof der Geisteswissenschaften), eine Ausstellungsfläche «Espaço Memória» (Platz der Erinnerung), ein Verlag «O Mundo em Gavetas» (Die Welt in Schubladen) und ein öffentliches Archiv für die zurückgehaltenen Unterlagen aus Barreiros geschichtsbezogener Recherche, die seine Bücher inspiriert hat. Zur Zeit gibt es bereits zwei Ausstellungen zu sehen. Eine über Ian Fleming – Autor einiger literarischer Werke, die die bekannten Verfilmungen um die Person «James Bond, Agent 007» weit übertreffen. Die zweite zeigt Gemälde der mexikanischen Künstlerin Sonia Cabañas (Öl auf Leinwand, diverse Stilrichtungen), deren Arbeiten an der Algarve noch wenig bekannt sind.

Die Geschichte der Welt in Schubfächern

Nach der gut besuchten Ausstellungseröffnung am vergangenen Samstag, dem 12., bewegt die neue Kulturstätte in Faro schon etwas. Hier gibt es für die Besucher ein Geheimnis zu entdecken. Hinter den Büchern verbirgt sich eine schöne Terrasse, auf der man lesen oder sich entspannen kann. Bald werden hier unterschiedliche Veranstaltungen Einzug halten, wie literarische Stammtische, Konzerte und andere - weniger geheime, aber stets mit kulturellem Hintergrund. So sagt Liliana Palhinha, die lange davon geträumt hat, zwei alte Häuser ihrer Familie zu restaurieren und sie der Stadt zugänglich zu machen.

Vivalgarve: Wie kam es zur Entstehung dieses Ortes?

Liliana Palhinha: Die Idee entstand dadurch, daß es hier in Faro keinen Ort mit Büchern gibt, unter denen sich nicht nur die aktuell angesagten befinden – die Bücher, die sich nach zwei, drei Monaten abgenutzt haben, die keine Geschichte schreiben. Er ist aus dem Gefühl entstanden, daß es keine Bücherei mit respektablen Schriftstellern gibt. Nicht, weil es nicht die Leser gibt, einfach nur, weil noch keiner daran gedacht hat, daß dieser Markt besteht. Wir denken, daß dieser Markt sich hält und folglich bringt er auch das Klientel. Unsere Politik ist, der Öffentlichkeit eine Auswahl an hochwertiger Literatur zur Verfügung zu stellen.

Was sind dabei die Kriterien?

Nun, die Auswahl übernehme ich. Wenn ich von ausgewählten Arbeiten spreche, meine ich nicht nur Werke, die nur auf ein hoch intellektuelles Publikum zugeschnitten sind. Ich spreche von guten Arbeiten für eine breite Leserschaft. Wir wollen ein breites Spektrum, vom Roman bis zu Kurzgeschichten. In der heutigen Zeit haben die Menschen wenig Zeit zum Lesen, ihnen gefallen Kurzgeschichten immer mehr. Wir haben viele portugiesische Autoren und wollen in Zukunft noch viel mehr. Wir setzen ein Schwergewicht auf Autoren der Algarve.

Des Weiteren gibt es hier im Haus noch «O mundo em gavetas»…

Ja, das stimmt. Wir haben schon vier Ausgaben verlegt. Wir begannen als Verlagshaus, aber schon damals gab es einen Plan für einen kulturellen Treffpunkt. Diese zwei Häuser waren Ruinen. 2006 haben wir die Unterlagen im Rathaus eingereicht, und nach zweieinhalb Jahren konnten wir endlich eröffnen. Die Prozesse laufen hier sehr bürokratisch ab... Also, die Idee gab es bereits damals. Wir schaffen hier einen Ort, den wir «Espaço Memória» nennen, weil wir in der Bibliothek der Geschichte eine besondere Gewichtung zukommen lassen. Zukünftig haben wir vor, Ausstellungen zu machen, die gleichzeitig der Literatur und der Geschichte gewidmet sind. Zum Beispiel einem Romanautor, der eine wichtige Epoche des 20. Jahrhunderts anschneidet. In Kürze möchten wir hier Ausstellungen mit Gemälden, Musik und literarische Kreise mit aktuellen Themen haben.

Mir ist bekannt, daß Sie eine Vorliebe für Themen haben, die mit der Spionage im Zweiten Weltkrieg in Zusammenhang stehen. Wie kommt das?

Korrekt. Das sind Themen, mit denen José António Barreiros sehr verbunden ist. Unser Verlag hat bisher vier Bücher veröffentlicht, alle zu dieser Thematik. Geheimnisse der Vergangenheit sind sehr faszinierend, niemand war der, für den man ihn hielt. Vielleicht kommt es daher, daß uns diese Welt mit ihren zwei Gesichtern so interessiert.

Gibt es einen besonderen Grund, daß Sie die Malerin Sónia Cabañas für die Eröffnungsausstellung gewählt haben?

Ja. Ich kannte ihre Bilder und bewundere sie sehr. Hier findet sich eine Retrospektive. Alle Bilder sind in Öl, aber sehr unterschiedlich. Sie zeigt Bilder, die von Mexiko und Portugal inspiriert wurden. Andere sind einfach nur fantasievoll. Ich wußte, daß diese Malerin bisher nur drei oder vier Ausstellungen hatte und an der Algarve nur zwei - eine in Albufeira, eine in Portimão. Es war schwierig für sie, Ausstellungsorte zu finden. Vielleicht weil sie nicht so facettenreich arbeitet. Deswegen, und weil ihre Bilder Qualität zeigen, dachte ich, ich lade sie ein.

Was sind Ihre Pläne für die nahe Zukunft?

Bezüglich unserer Events werden wir versuchen, möglichst viel Abwechslung zu bringen. Das hier ist nur der Anfang.
